상점절도범의 절도대상 선택에 관한 연구

상점절도에 대응하기 위하여 소매업 관계자들은 다양한 손실방지전략을 고안하여 실행하고 있다. 그러나 지금까지 우리나라에서 민간영역의 손실방지전략이 과연 상점절도를 예방하는데 얼마나 효과적인지에 대하여 살펴본 연구는 전무하였다. 그러므로 이러한 연구의 공백을 메우기 위하여 본 연구는 상점절도 경험이 있는 범죄자들과의 심층면담을 통해 상점절도범들이 범행대상 선택시 어떠한 상황적 요인을 고려하였는지를 분석하려 시도하였다. 분석결과, 상점절도범들은 절도대상 선택시 여러 상황적 요인을 고려하지만 모든 요인을 공평하게 고려하는 것은 아니라는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 본 연구에서 연구참여자들은 범행대상의 견고화; 출구검색; CCTV; 자연적 감시; 시설관리인을 다른 상황적 요인보다 중요한 요인으로 거론하였다. 이러한 분석결과는 정책적으로도 중요한 함의를 지닌다. 이는 상점절도를 방지하고자 하는 경우에 주요 요인에 집중함으로써 보다 큰 효과를 기대할 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 주요 상황적 요인에 대한 구체적 상점절도 대응방안도 분석결과를 바탕으로 제시하였다.
Abstract
To tackle shoplifting, retailers have implemented a variety of loss prevention strategies. In the Korean context, however, there has been no research on if these strategies are really effective on minimizing losses. In order to fill this gap, the current study tried to analyze which situational factors shoplifters considered most in their selection of targets through in-depth interviews with known offenders. This study found that factors offenders identified as most important to their assessment of targets fell into the five categories: Target Hardening; Access Control to Facilities; Exit Screening; CCTV; Natural Surveillance. The results have an important policy implication because loss prevention strategies can be more effective by focusing on the factors found influential to shoplifters' assessment. In relation to these factors, several anti-shoplifting recommendations are made based on the findings of the study.
