듀이의 상황 개념과 탐구의 상관성 연구

본 연구는 듀이의 ‘탐구’ 개념을 환경의 변화에 대한 유기체의 ‘존재유지’ 방식으로 논의하고자 한다. 기존의 선행연구에서는 듀이의 탐구를 ‘문제 해결력’ 내지 ‘지식을 획득해 가는 방법’으로 해석하고 있다. 이 같은 해석은 듀이의 저서인 『논리학: 탐구이론』에 기술되어 있는 탐구의 존재론적(existential) 모체(matrix)중 하나인 ‘생물학적인’ 측면을 간과한 채 ‘문화적인’ 측면에 국한시켜 탐구를 파악한 연유이다. 탐구를 ‘문화적인’ 측면에만 국한 시켜 해석할 경우 탐구가 유기체의 삶에 있어 왜 ‘존재론적’인 개념인지를 파악할 수가 없다. 따라서 연구자는 듀이의 탐구를 ‘존재론적인’ 개념으로 밝히고자 ‘생물학적인’ 측면에서 그의 ‘상황’ 개념을 탐구와 연관 지어 파악하고자 하였다. 듀이의 ‘상황의 불확정성’은 유기체와 환경의 상호작용에서 발생된 ‘불균형’을 의미하는 것으로 ‘탐구’는 불균형을 균형의 상태로 전환시키는 유기적인 과정이다. 연구자가 이와 같이 듀이의 탐구를 ‘상황’ 개념과 관련지어 파악할 경우 『논리학』에 기술되어 있는 ‘탐구의 일반적 정의(Dewey, 1938: 104-105)’에 대한 기존의 선행연구에서의 해석은 수정이 불가피하게 된다. 즉 기존의 선행연구에서는 『논리학』의 ‘탐구의 일반적 정의’에 기술되어 있는 “불확정적인 상황을 확정적인 상황으로 전환시키는 통제된 변형”의 문장의 의미를 단지 ‘인지적인 조작’의 과정으로만 파악해 탐구가 유기체의 삶에 있어 왜 ‘존재론적’인 개념인지를 밝히고 있지 않다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 듀이의 탐구에 대한 적확한 해석을 위해 그의 ‘상황’ 개념을 재규정해 봄으로써 ‘탐구’가 유기체의 삶에 있어 ‘존재론적’인 개념임을 규명하고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to discuss if it can be verified that Dewey's concept of inquiry has method of organism's existential maintenance against environmental changes. Prior studies interpreted Dewey's inquiry as ‘a method to solve problems’ and ‘a way of being obtaining knowledge’. Such analyses were caused by the comprehension of inquiry just within the limit of a cultural aspect, while overseeing a ‘biological aspect’ one of existential matrixes of inquiry which are written in ‘Logic’ authored by Dewey. If inquiry is interpreted within the limit of the cultural aspect, it is impossible to understand why inquiry has an existential concept. Thus the researcher tried to comprehend Dewey's concept of situation by connecting it to inquiry, from the viewpoint of ‘biological aspect’, in order to successfully verify that Dewey's inquiry has an existential concept. ‘An Indeterminate situation’ of Dewey means a ‘imbalance’ occurring from an interaction between organisms and environments, and inquiry is an organic process that converts the imbalance into a balanced status. In case the researcher comprehends Dewey's inquiry by connecting it to his situation concept, it is unavoidable to correct the interpretations of prior studies on the ‘General Definition of Inquiry (Dewey, 1938: 104-105)’ written in ‘Logic’. That is, prior studies understood the meaning of a sentence, “the controlled or directed transformation which converts an indeterminate situation into a determinate situation”, as just a process of cognitive operation, so that they failed to explain why inquiry has an existential concept. Thus, this study tried to re-define the Dewey's concept of situation and to define that inquiry has an existential concept related to life of organism, all of which were for the purpose of interpreting the Dewey's concept of inquiry accurately.
