Abstract

This study tests self-derogation theory by applying it to the Korean adult drug users in order to examine the general applicability of the theory in the non-American setting. A secondary data is used. The data was originally collected by the Korean Institute of Criminology in 2005 and included 1,471 adult drug users. The current study uses 1,462 cases from the original date set after the omission of cases with missing data. Presence or absence, magnitude, and direction of causality between self-derogation and drug use moderated by two conditional variables, deviant identity and social bonding, are tested. According to the magnitude of social bonding, cases are divided into three social bonding groups. Three separate Multiple Ordinary Squared Regression analysis is conducted. The study finds that there exists causality between self-derogation and drug use which is mediated by deviant identity and social bonding and thus more complex interrelations among variables are formed. Based on the results, the current study proposes the consideration of policy intervention that supports the decrease of self-derogation and at the same time the increase of positive self-image. Meanwhile, much owing to the use of the secondary data, this study has some limitation regarding the difficulty of extraction of variables for appropriate statistical analysis. Nevertheless, this study still holds some contribution to the field of criminology in that it applies Kaplan's self-derogation theory which has been rarely introduced to Korean criminological society to Korean adult substance abusers, tests the theory, and finds some support for that theory.
