『에밀』을 통해서 본 교사의 권위와 벌의 문제

교사의 권위와 벌의 문제는 이제까지 상반된 두 시각에서 접근되어온 경향이 있다. 하나는 교사의 권위와 벌이 아동의 자유와 권리를 침해한다는 점에서 당연히 배제되어야 한다는 입장이며, 다른 하나는 아동을 올바로 이끌기 위한 교사의 권위와 벌은 다소간 인정되어야 한다는 입장이다. 권위와 벌을 배제해야 한다는 입장은 교권과 강제성보다는 학생인권과 자율성을 부각시키는 것이며, 권위와 벌을 옹호하는 입장은 아이를 이끄는 모델로서의 어른의 역할을 강조하는 것이다. 이러한 찬반양론이 존재한다는 것은 교육에서 권위와 벌이 차지하는 위치가 애매성을 띤다는 사실을 반영한다. 따라서 우리는 교사의 권위와 벌에 대한 찬반 입장을 택하기에 앞서서 교육철학적 관점에서 권위와 벌이 교육에서 차지하는 위치가 정확히 무엇인지를 분석할 필요가 있다. 이러한 작업을 위해 본고에서는 루소의 자연주의 교육사상으로 거슬러 올라가 그의 『에밀』에 나타난 관점에 주목하고자 한다. 비록 루소가 전반적으로 교사의 권위와 벌에 대해 비판적 관점을 견지한다는 것은 사실이지만, 그와 동시에 그는 특정한 측면에서 권위와 벌을 지지하고 있다. 이 점에서 루소의 관점은 현대 교육에서 교사의 권위와 벌의 문제를 보다 포괄적인 시각에서 재음미할 계기를 마련해준다. 따라서 본고에서는 루소에 있어 권위와 벌의 문제를 고찰함으로써, 그의 관점을 재평가함은 물론, 교육 사태에서 교사의 권위와 벌의 지위를 어떻게 보아야 하는가 하는 대안적 관점을 모색하고자 한다.
Abstract
There have been two contrasting views about the status of teacher's authority and punishment. One is to object to the teacher's authority and punishment, the other is to defend them. The former is to emphasize the freedom and autonomy of children than the rights of teacher, the latter is to regard the corrector role as a teacher as important. These different viewpoints reflect the ambiguity of the meaning of teacher's authority and punishment. This shows the necessity of analyzing the status of teacher's authority and punishment in education from the standpoint of educational philosophy, before choosing a position between the two contrasting views. In this context, this study is to give attention to the educational thought of Rousseau, well known as a representative thinker of Naturalism, especially focused on his concepts of authority and punishment in his Emile. It is true that Rousseau objects to the teacher's authority and punishment in general. However, it is a mistake to regard him as a person totally against the uses of authority and punishment. Rousseau defends teacher's authority and punishment from some aspects: indirect authority and natural punishment. In this point, Rousseau's viewpoint provides us with the momentum to re-interpret the problem of authority and punishment in modern education. Therefore, this study is to investigate Rousseau's viewpoint of authority and punishment, and to revaluate hie viewpoint from the view of the educational philosophy. It is expected that the result of this study will be helpful to make clear the status of authority and punishment in modern education.
