Abstract

This study examines the impact of disasters and incidents generates mass casualty on college students’ vicarious victimizations such as mental and psychological distress. it is especially the impact of aftermaths of Sewoel ferri incidents last year. Further, this study amis to identify risk factors increasing college students’ psychological problems and future disaster perceptions as a part of assessment for vicarious victimizations. To fulfill the purpose, the authors used a sample of 354 college students from four universities in three different provisions. Using multivariable regression analyses, this study developed four different analysis models. The study results suggest that considerable college students showed higher level of psychological alertness which is consistent previous study findings. Further, it suggested that it is partly supportive for that arguments that mass-media impacts on the vicarious victimization. That means, longer expose of mass media news reports dealing with disaster reports such as Seweol ferri incidents may increase the risk of mental and/or psychological suffering among college students. The conclusion, discussion, policy implications, and suggestions for the future studies were discussed in this study.
