Abstract

The research wishes to establish, in the side of adolescent Gachul-fam members as crime offenders, whether they perform rational decisions, and if they do, what the influential factors to crime victim selections are. Therefore, in-depth interviews with adolescent in Gachul-fam experiences and associated experts have been conducted and a consequent interview analysis as follows. First, in terms of the criminal acts by adolescents in Gachul-fam, their rational decision practices have been varied depending on various situational factors including their criminal history, frequency and experience of runaways, whether they have joined a runaway family and the crime type which they are committing at the time. That is, when a crime is being committed, the adolescent in Gachul-fam committed a premeditated crime as joint principal offenders rather than an opportunistic crime, and the more runaway frequency and experience, and the more crimes they have been involved, the higher tendency they have presented to commit violent crimes rather than sole subsistence crimes such as thefts and frauds. Second, if adolescents in Gachul-fam commit crimes based on rational decisions, looking into the factors influencing possible crime victim selections by them in accordance with discussions in victimology, aspects such as proximity, risk and attractiveness based on each position of the adolescents, were found to be the matters to be considered in a relative manner: the more the adolescents are familiar and comfortable to the places such as surrounding areas of their abodes and internet web-sites and the lesser probability of getting resistance and of being reported by a potential victim, the higher possibility to becoming a probable crime victim target was discovered. Furthermore, when adolescents have had highly experienced with adolescents in Gachul-fam or more frequent prison lives, they lacked in guilty consciousness, hence, had decreased risk-bearing level to commit criminal acts. To conclude, as a result, whether adolescents practice a rational decision to commit criminal acts and how they determine their crime victim selections have been revealed to be varied, based on their situations, depending upon factors, such as crime types, runaway experience and frequency, and whether they have formed a adolescents in Gachul-fam
