이 논문의 목적은 존 듀이의 습관 개념을 그가 견지하고 있는 일원론에 충실하게 조명하는 데 있다. 이 논문에서는 일원론에 충실하게 듀이의 습관 개념을 조명한다는 것을 다음과 같은 두 가지 접근방식을 명료화하는 것으로 규정하였다. 첫째, 습관의 부정적인 의미와 긍정적인 의미를 분석함으로써 양자 간의 관련성과 습관의 양면성을 가치중립적으로 규명하는 것이다. 둘째, 습관의 개인적 차원과 사회문화적 차원 간의 상호보완적 관계와 통합 가능성을 구체화하는 것이다. 특히 두 번째 접근방식과 관련해서 이 논문은 습관과 관습의 관계, 그리고 소여문화로서 직업에서 부각되는 습관의 특성들을 주목하였다. 이러한 시도는 듀이의 교육론이 성장이라는 하나의 주제어로 축약될 수 있다는 점을 감안할 때 성장에 대한 일원론적 이해라는 말로 정리될 수도 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to view John Dewey's concept of habit in the perspective of monism, the theory he firmly believes in. This study clarified two approaches to Dewey's concept of habit in order to show that Dewey's concept of habit can be explained from a monistic standpoint. First, the relationship between negative and affirmative meanings of habit was value-neutrally investigated through the analysis of those meanings. Second, mutually complementary relationship between personal dimension and sociocultural dimension of habit and possibility of their unification were embodied. In particular, in relation to the second approach, this study paid attention to the relation between habit and custom and the characteristics of habit distinguished by one's occupation as a given culture. Such an attempt can be summarized by the phrase ‘monistic understanding of growth’, considering the fact that Dewey's philosophy of education can be curtailed into a thematic word called as growth.
