이 논문은 오늘날 학교의 다양한 병리 현상과 파편화된 인간의 문제가 교육에서의 영성의 상실에서 비롯되었다는 전제하에, 교육에서의 영성교육의 위치를 재음미해보는 데 목적이 있었다. 이러한 목적을 위해 먼저, 현대 교육의 문제점을 영성교육과 관련하여 살펴보고 영성교육이 왜 상실되었는가를 지성사적, 문화적, 정책적 측면에서 고찰하고, 영성교육이 무엇이며, 왜 영성교육을 해야 하는지를 논의한 후, (학교)교육에서 영성을 어떻게 함양할 것인지에 대해 탐색하였다. 이성과 과학을 중시하는 시대정신, 사이버와 물질적인 것을 추구하는 풍토, 가치와 종교 중립적 정책 등이 교육에서 영성의 상실을 초래하게 되었다. 영성의 상실은 인간의 한 측면의 상실에 그치는 것이 아니라 총체적 인간 형성을 불가능하게 한다. 학교에서 종교적 영성교육은 제한적일 수밖에 없으나, 총체적 인간의 형성을 위해서 적어도 비종교적 영성교육이 요청된다.
Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to restate the importance of pursuing spirituality in education having faced human debris and pathological symptoms in school. To this end, I explore the causes of forgetting spirituality in education in terms of the history of intellect, culture, and educational policy. Furthermore, I discuss why we should pursuit spirituality and how to cultivate in school education. The modern thought imbued with scientific thinking and reason, material and economy, and neutrality in education has brought about neglection of spirituality in education. The lack of spirituality does not only deprive one aspect of the whole person, but also makes it difficult for us to become integrated people. Therefore, in order to cultivate a wholly-balanced person and aid human flourishing, the pursuit of spirituality is necessary in school education, in the form of either religious or secular spirituality.
