Abstract

The family metaphors embodied in the poetic literature of North Korea up until the period of Kim Il-seong in the 1980s substituted the communist party, nation and the people with the family members, expressing them in images and creating meanings out of them. As the communist party was used as the metonyms of the heart, vital force or lifeline in the poetry, the nature of the party was expanded as the instinct to return to the party. Idealizing the family images and using the life sources as the images of the party means that the people are not separate from the party and nation and have the inseparable relationships with them. By embodying the people answering the calls of the party, leader and nation in absolute manners as the “good subjects,” the poems demonstrated how the subjects were called to the ideology. In the process, the poems reinforced the individual worship by turning the subjects belonging to the absolute leader into the others. The “social and political life” was embodied as the means for the subjects to give up their inside features and approve the control over their life. In the literature, the human beings were depicted as the individuals that subject their bodies, minds, and even desires to the controlling class, following the principles of ruling. The family metaphors described by the emotional propaganda approaches such as literature worked as the means and principles to objectify and mobilize the entire human race.
