Abstract

Along with the explosive interests in citizenship and citizenship education in and for South Korea, this study delves into the popular notion(s) of citizenship and its contexts in South Korea. To do so, I seek to (1) explore three distinct aspects of citizenship that determine such notion(s) deeply entwined with the political, historical, social, and cultural contexts of South Korea (and the Korean peninsula); (2) examine those aspects based within the debates of citizenship and nationalism offered by Étienne Balibar and Benedict Anderson; and (3) shed light on citizenship as a widespread myth(s) and on its structure—a second-order semiological system. In doing so, this study elucidates upon the widespread inherited cultural biases about the prevalent meaning(s) of citizenship in/for South Korea and its onto-epistemological presupposition, which shapes the unchanged institutionalized structure that excludes “non-Korean” from Korean citizens. Such cultural biases, I further articulate, shape and disseminate a particular monolithic notion of citizenship that perpetuates the unequal relations of power in South Korean society(ies).
