교육현상의 다중결정과 교육연구의 방법적 원리

교육현상의 복잡성을 인과성 측면에서 사유하는 일은, 교육의 본질적 성격들 가운데 하나를 밝히는 작업인 동시에, 적절한 교육과학을 위한 교육철학의 ‘기초작업’이기도 하다. 바스카의 ‘다중결정’ 개념과 비판적 실재론의 존재론에 의하면, 세계에는 직접적 지각을 통해 포착되기 힘든 심층의 구조와 인과적 기제가 존재하며, 일반적으로 다수의 기제들이 동시에 작동하고 있다. 그러므로 하나의 사건 혹은 현상은 일반적으로 다수의 기제들이 동시에 작동함으로써 결정된다. 교육을 포함한 사회현상은 존재론적으로 자연적 기제들을 전제하는 가운데 정신적 기제들과 사회적 기제들이 작동함으로써—비유하자면 ‘두껍게’—다중결정된다. 그런데 교육은 언제나 사회적인 동시에 정신적인 현상이라는 점에서 ‘두꺼울’ 뿐만 아니라 ‘넓게’ 다중결정된다고 할 수 있다. 더욱이, 다른 인간과학 들처럼 교육과학 역시 엄밀한 실험적 폐쇄(단일 기제가 작동하는 인위적 상태)를 조성하는 것이 원칙적으로 불가 능하다. 결국, 교육과학의 연구는 사회학적 기제들과 심리학적 기제들을 동시에 고려하는 면밀한 ‘추상화’를 통해 주어진 교육현상을 발생시킨 주된 원인으로서의 구조와 기제를 밝히고, ‘구체화’를 통해 주된 원인이 다른 부수적 기제들과 함께 그 현상을 발생시킬 수 있음을 보여야 한다. 이러한 과정을 통해, 방법적 원리로서 ‘추상(화)과 구체(화)의 변증법’은 교육연구가 인과적 설명을 하는 동시에 상정된 구조의 실재성을 입증할 수 있게 한다.
Abstract
Thinking about the complexity of educational phenomena in terms of causality is the investigating one of the fundamental natures of education, and at the same time, it is also the “under-labouring” of the philosophy of education for the proper science of education. According to Bhaskar’s concept of “multiple determination” and the ontology of critical realism, in the world, there exist depth structures and causal mechanisms that are difficult to comprehend through direct perception, and in general, many mechanisms operate simultaneously. Therefore, an event or phenomenon is generally determined by the simultaneous operation of many mechanisms. Social phenomena, including education, are inherently intertwined with ontologically presupposing natural mechanisms, through mental and social mechanisms. These phenomena are,―by analogy, “thickly”―multiple-determined. However, education is always multiple-determined “widely” as well as “thickly” in that it is both a social and mental phenomenon. Moreover, similar to the other human sciences, it is, in principle, impossible for the science of education to make rigorous experimental closure (an artificial state in which only a single mechanism operates). Ultimately, researches in the science of education have to uncover the structure and mechanism as the primary cause of a given specific educational phenomenon, through careful “abstraction” that considers sociological and psychological mechanisms simultaneously, and through “concretization”, the main cause, along with other subsidiary mechanisms, can generate the phenomenon. Through this process, “dialectics of the abstract and the concrete,” as a methodical principle, enables educational research to provide a causal explanation, and at the same time, to prove the reality of the presumed structure.
