비판적 실재론은, 교육학의 경험과학적 분야에서 이루어지는 연구를 위한 인과적 설명 모형을 마련하고, 이에 부합하는 글쓰기 양식의 문제를 사유하는 작업의 토대가 될 수 있는 (사회)과학철학이다. 비판적 실재론을 정초한 바스카는 기존의 ‘표준적’인 포괄법칙적 설명 모형과 달리, 인과적 설명을 위한 모형들을 제시했는데, 특히 학제적 연구를 고려한 모형을 교육연구에 활용할 수 있다. 본 연구가 제안한 모형은 기제들을 점차 투입하면서 기제들의 결합이 낳는 효과를 고려하는 절합(articulation)을 특징으로 한다. 이는 교육현상의 다중결정에 관여하는 다수의 광범한 기제들을 체계적으로 고려한 인과적 설명을 가능하게 한다. 그런데 과학적 글쓰기 표준처럼 여겨지는 ‘IMRAD(서론-방법-결과-논의)’ 형식은 실험과학에서 유래한 것으로, 사실상 실험이 불가능한 복잡한 대상을 인과적으로 설명하기 위한 서술에는 잘 들어맞지 않는다. 교육연구자들은 경직된 글쓰기 틀의 한계를 인식하고, 각 연구가 설정하는 인과적 모형에서의 출발점과 종착점에 부합하는 서술을 통해, 해당 교육현상을 인과적으로 설명해야 한다. 교육에 대한 인과적 파악은 교육의 변화에 유효한 실천을 마련하는 과학적 근거가 되며, 인과적 설명 모형과 서술에 대한 사유는 이를 통해 교육의 이론과 실천에 기여할 수 있다.
Abstract
Critical realism is a philosophy of (social) science that can serve as a foundation for establishing causal models of explanation for empirical research of education, and deliberating on the problems of writing style corresponded to the models. Bhaskar, who founded critical realism, presented models for causal explanation that differ from the existing “standard” covering-law model of explanation. In particular, a model that considers interdisciplinary research can be used for educational research. Another model proposed here is characterized by articulation, which considers the effects of a combination of mechanisms as they are gradually introduced. This model enables a causal explanation that systematically considers multiple-determination of educational phenomena across diverse mechanisms. However, the Introduction-Methods-Results-Discussion (IMRAD) format, which originates from experimental science, and is considered a standard for modern scientific writing, is not well suited to causal explanations of complex phenomena that are almost impossible to experiment on. As such, educational researchers should recognize the limitations of rigid writing frameworks (IMRAD) and causally explain the educational phenomenon, through writing styles that accord with the starting and ending points of the causal model applied in each research. A causal grasp of education can provide the scientific foundation for effective practices for educational change. Through this process, deliberation on the causal models of explanation and writing style can contribute to educational theory and practice.
