Abstract
This paper examines the research results on how Confucianism and Taoist thought have been implemented in Korean educational philosophy over the past 60 years, and looks into the future prospects. Confucianism is an educational philosophy that pursues self-cultivation and consideration for others through the study of self-cultivation and internal and external king. Taoism emphasizes naturalistic educational thought through the thought of non-action that is wary of artificial or intentional actions. Since the 1970s, research on Confucian educational philosophy has progressed in various ways, with about 50 doctoral theses and 70 master’s theses. In addition, there are about 290 research papers published in related academic journals, including the Journal of Educational Philosophy Studies of the Korean Educational Philosophy Association. There are about 10 doctoral theses, 20 master's theses, and 30 research papers published in academic journals on Taoist education. In the case of Confucianism, most of the research was conducted focusing on Confucius, Mencius, Xunzi, Zhuzi, Wang Yangming, and several Confucian scholars of Joseon, and in the case of Taoism, most of the research was limited to two figures, Laozi and Zhuangzi. In the future, we should continue to study these people in depth, but we can secure the maturity of educational philosophy by expanding the scope without overlooking other valuable areas. In particular, research is requested that faces the limitations of Confucianism and Taoism in their time and reflects on the issues of modern reinterpretation and new application considering the spirit of the times.
