Abstract

This research paper focuses on Vietnam War and Buddhist Movement around four main issues, Diem Government’s characteristic, oppression against Buddhism, meaning of Monk Thich Quang Duc’s death by setting himself on fire, and could we read Buddhist Movement as ideology of a Cold War?Ho Chi Minh and communists in Hanoi Government have earned legitimacy as nationalists who led an independent movement. In contrast, Ngo Dinh Diem could not sustain a banner of anti-feudalism and anti-foreign influence he held up. He concentrated on anti-communism with a support from the United States of America. In the mean time, He sided with Catholicism that will support his movement and began to crash with Buddhism. His biased religious policies, evident from three incidents of Buddhist oppressions, led to a coup and destroyed the government. In return, this ended Ngo Dinh Diem’s reign of government. Should the burning of Mong Thich Quang Duc to death in June 11th, 1963 viewed as a self-immolation or as a suicide? From a perspective of westernized ideology, ending one’s life through setting oneself on fire could be classified as a suicide. However, self-immolation based on a sacrifice to solve the current problem with a religious belief and to prevent sacrifice of other lives should be considered separately from other suicides. An opinion that concludes Monk Thich Quang Duc’s death as a suicide, which perpetuates a political desire, is based on a lack of understanding about Buddhism’s concept of mercy. Could we conclude the Buddhist Movement as an anti-government fight because some Buddhist supported communist ideologies or because some communists participated in the Buddhist Movement? In addition, could we label Thich Tri Quang, who led the Buddhist Movement, as a communist because he found comprising point with NLF and emphasized neutralism to end the war? Connecting the Buddhist Movement with communism and labeling Thich Tri Quang as a communist can only viewed as interpretations based on a Cold-War ideology. It has been 30 years since the end of Vietnam War and 20 years since the end of Cold-War state with the fall of Soviet Union. However, there are still researches being reproduced that view the Vietnam War based on a Cold War ideology. Even though such researches are published by military institutions, we can escape the concern that Western ideology and a Cold-War ideology are still being applied to view Asia. I wish that more research are published that studies the Vietnam War and the Buddhist Movement based on Vietnam’s colors.
