Abstract

This study re-evaluates the research contributions of the Korean Journal of Legal History to the field of Asian legal history and proposes directions for future research. The Korean Journal of Legal History has addressed various legal histories across Asian regions, including East Asia—such as China, Japan, and Taiwan—and has also provided comparative perspectives on Asian legal history through dedicated special issues. A classification of the journal’s articles on Asian legal history by period and field reveals that the journal has traced developments in legal history across diverse time frames, from pre-modern to modern and contemporary periods. Furthermore, it has included research in various domains such as constitutional law, civil law, criminal law, legal systems, and legal ideologies. These scholarly contributions represent significant achievements, especially given the challenging research environment characterized by a limited number of scholars in the field. However, the research has often been concentrated in specific areas due to the restricted focus of individual researchers. Thus, the challenge remains to pursue more comprehensive comparative studies that encompass the full breadth of Asian legal history, taking into account the diverse regional contexts across Asia.
