Abstract

Starting from the premise that sex-role is a social construct, this study analyzes whether North Korean migrants' attitude towards sex-role and marital power relation have changed in South Korea. The results of the survey data on 280 North Korean migrants show that their stereotypical sex-role notions are generally weakening but the degrees of changes differ by specific role sphere. There is a bigger attitudinal change in housework role than bread-winner role. The attitude towards taking women's sacrifice and obedience to husband for granted is weakening but is still conservative. While helping one’s husband was seen as the most important married women's role to both men and women in North Korea, men have come to emphasize mother’s role of raising children in South Korea. Migrated women’s employment, income level and the time spent living in South Korea have not affected the changes in the attitudes towards sex-role and married women’s role priority, and marital power relation. Only age makes a difference in viewing sex-role. While the weakest stereotype about sex-role appears among female immigrants in their 20s, the older tend to show more conservative.
