Abstract

Elderly couples that have maintained long-term relationships cast constant influence upon each other for a long time. However, previous studies that dealt with marital relationships in late life show some limitations in that they analyzed the relationships using the information gathered from only one of the couples. Such approach is insufficient to study the direct interaction between elderly couples. Therefore, based on three waves of longitudinal data gathered from both of the husband and wife, this study aimed to examine the long-term interaction in the level of marital satisfaction between husbands and wives over a six year time period. The study sample were 1801 elderly couples (N=3602) aged 60 years and over, who participated in all three waves of KLoSA (2006, 2008, 2010). The cross-legged model with Mplus 6.12 was used for the analysis. The results show that elderly husbands and wives share a significant degree of longitudinal interaction in terms of influencing each other's marital satisfaction. More specifically, husbands' and wives'level of marital satisfaction reciprocally predicted each other's marital satisfaction two years later. Therefore, in studying the late-life marital relationship, it may be necessary to consider both spouses because the marital relationship becomes significantly intwined during late life.
