Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the association between divorce and depressive symptoms using longitudinal panel data analysis. Data were the first to fourteenth wave of Korean Welfare Panel Survey conducted in 2006-2019. Samples were Korean men and women aged 20-79 who were married in 2006 but divorced afterward or maintained their marital status throughout the survey. Results from pooled ordinary least squares analysis supported the social selection perspective because the results found that divorced men and women were more depressed than married men and women. Results from fixed-effects panel data analysis supported the social causation perspective because women reduced depressive symptoms with divorce transition. However, men did not show a change in depressive symptoms with the divorce transition. The gendered effects of divorce transition on depressive symptoms between men and women suggested that men and women undergo divorce transition differently. Also, this study showed that the results based on the comparison between the married and divorced groups were different from the results examining intra-individual divorce transition, so it is
