Abstract

This paper shows that in Korea income inequality leads to low fertility by increasing the cost of education for middle and low income classes. This is due to the fact that there is a strong tendency among low and middle income families to keep up with the pattern of wealthy family’s educational investments, meaning that the effect of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ in education has been extremely powerful. This tendency is theoretically analyzed using a quantity-quality tradeoff model that incorporates the keeping up with the Joneses effect, and it is also shown that this result is consistent with the Korean fertility data.
