Abstract

According to Lionel Robbins, it is a common misunderstanding that economics assumes a world full of Homo economicus. If it is a misunderstanding, then where and when in economic theory are others-regarding preferences analyzed? In order to answer the question, this paper traces economic theories back to Lionel Robbins’ “An essay of the nature and significance of economic science” (1932) and Philip Henry Wicksteed’s “The common sense of political economy and selected papers and reviews on economic theory” (1910) both of which defined economics and the subject matter of the economics. Since the definition of economics and the subject matter of the economics that they defined still remains to be mostly adopted ones, examining the status of other-regarding preferences in their theories will allow us to critically review the current status of others-regarding preferences in modern main stream economic theories.
