As the competition among firms has become more intensive, risk drivers in the supply chain have also become morediverse, emphasizing the need to apply effective control mechanisms according to supplier importance. Based oncontingency and agency theories, this study intended to empirically investigate the effect of monitoring as an ex-postcontrol mechanism on buyer’s performance according to the degree of supplier’s importance and the types of monitoring. We use a random sample of 479 manufacturing firms collected from the Korea Productivity Center. Our results show thatbuyer can effectively control supplier through process monitoring as supply chain risk increases. The results providetheoretical and practical insights on monitoring according to a degree of supplier’s importance under supply chain risk.

Abstract
