지역신문과 지역공동체의 구축 : 충북 옥천지역 사례를 중심으로

본 연구는 지역신문 구독이 지역공동체의 구축에 어떻게 기여하는지 분석했다. 이를 위해 지역공동체의 구성요소들을 공통적 유대감, 사회적 네트워크 활동, 지역정치 참여로 나누고, 다시 공통적 유대감의 하위요소로는 소속감과 친밀감, 사회적 네트워크 활동의 하위요소로는 사적 네트워크 활동과 공적 네트워크 활동, 그리고 지역정치 참여의 하위요소로는 공식적 정치참여와 비공식적 정치참여로 나누어, 옥천지역 주민을 대상으로 전화조사를 실시하였다. 분석 결과에 의하면 지역신문 구독자와 비구독자 간에 지역공동체 변인인 공통적 유대감, 사회적 네트워크 활동, 지역정치 참여 모두에 있어서 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 그러나 회귀분석을 통해 다른 관련 사회인구학적 변인을 통제한 결과, 지역신문 구독 여부가 사회적 네트워크 활동의 두 하위요소인 사적 네트워크 및 공적 네트워크 활동과 지역정치 참여의 하위요소인 비공식적 정치참여에만 독립적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 공통적 유대감에는 지역신문 구독 여부보다 거주기간과 소득의 영향력이 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 본 연구의 대상 지역에서는 지역신문 구독 여부가 지역공동체 구축에 부분적으로라도 기여하고 있음이 확인되었다.
Abstract
This study examined how local newspaper reading contributes to the local community building. This study identified three elements of local community: psychological common ties, social network engagement, and political participation in local area. Again, this study divided the common ties into rational identity and emotional closeness; social networks into private and public ones; local political participation into official and inofficial ones. And then, the telephone survey was performed with an allotted sample of Okchon residents. Result showed that there was a significant difference between local newspaper readers and non-readers in common ties, social network engagement, and local political participation. But after the socio-demographic factors were controlled by regression, it was found that local newspaper reading was related to the private and public social network engagement as well as inofficial political participation only. Meanwhile common ties were significantly related to residence period and income level rather than to local newspaper reading. Therefore it was understood that, in Okchon where the survey was performed, local newspaper reading contributes at least in part to the local community building.
