Abstract
This study intends to examine the moderating effects of economic conditions and service category on the effectiveness of regulatory-focused ad messages. Specifically, possible interaction effects of the three independent variables are examined with respect to attitude toward ad and purchase intention. In doing so, economic condition was categorized as roaring and depression, service was divided into utilitarian and hedonic, and ad messages were put into prevention-focused and promotion-focused. A 2 x 2 x 2 experiment was conducted with a sample of 436 undergraduate students at a large private university in Seoul and Incheon. The results show that economic condition and service type significantly affect the relationship between ad messages and their effectiveness. That is, under good economic condition, the respondents showed more favorable ad attitude and a high level of purchase intention when promotion-focused message was used. In addition, the effect of types of ad messages was found to be significant when prevention-focused messages were used for hedonic services while the effect was not significant for promotion-focused messages. These findings imply that the effect of regulatory-focused service ad messages varies by economic conditions and type of services. Thus, service marketers may have to pay special attention to differentiated use of promotion- or prevention-focused messages, considering economic conditions and the type of services.
