Abstract
Police officers are one of the occupations that are at highest risk for occupational stress, emotional distress, and trauma. Often times, such mental health issues interfere with the performance of police officers in their ability to effectively maintain public order. The purpose of this study was to understand the current mental health status of police officers utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methodology. Participants consisted of 278 police officers(mean age 45.27±9.00, males 88.5%) in Seoul. All participants completed self-report measures of the following domains: depression, suicide, stress, sleep, PTSD, and alcohol. Subsequently, a semi-structured interview was conducted to investigate reasons why police officers do not seek treatment, and recommendations to policies to improve mental health in police officers. The results showed most of police officers experienced insomnia(52.5%). Additionally, 73.4% of the sample reported having at least one at risk symptom of mental health problems. However only 2.5% agreed to seek treatment for these problems. These finding indicate that it is necessary to implement interventions to improve mental health of police officers, considering the obstacles. Thus, this study suggests that substantive and efficient policies of mental health in police officers are needed.
