Abstract
This study explores the cultural characteristics of “speaking” among contemporary Koreans by investigating their perceptions. The researchers collected data from 416 respondents through an on-line survey which asked the participants to rate the importance of four different types of “speaking” in their lives: conversation, explanation, persuasion, and discussion. The results showed that “speaking” was considered more important in the workplace than in the non-working environment. The perceptions also significantly varied according to the age of the participants. The results implied that “speaking” among Koreans reflects collectivistic culture in general with varying degrees according to their ages.
