Abstract
This study aims to investigates the process of the formation of public opinion on online discussions. In order to explore the volatility of public opinion through online discussion, this study is focused on the wave of public opinion. The wave theory provides this study with a theoretical perspective to understand the dynamics of public opinion. Public opinion will be shaped by the breadth of waves, the number of waves and the cycle of waves. This study will present the pattern of the rise and the fall of public opinion formation on online discussions, especially, its volatility under online media compared to news production. The aggregate process of opinion formation may display the repetitional wave model, the explosive wave model, and the latent disappearance model. The latent disappearance model was on the mainstream online media. The repetitional wave model was on the portal site. In addition, Finally, The explosive wave model was on the alternative online media. This study outlines the determinants of rise and falls of public opinion formation on online discussions. This study shows that the different specifications of the communication factors produce very different waves of opinion formation. In conclusion, internet serves as a segmented public sphere which allows venue for people to express their political opinions towards values issues openly.
