페이스북과 트위터 읽기와 쓰기에 따른 의견불일치 경험이 정치효능감과 사회자본에 미치는 영향

초록

이 연구는 페이스북과 트위터를 매개로 한 정치커뮤니케이션의 대표적 수단인 읽기와 쓰기 그리고 그 과정에서 필연적으로 겪게 되는 의견불일치 경험에 따른 커뮤니케이션 효과를 정치효능감과 사회자본에 초점을 두고 알아보았다. 온라인 조사를 통해 506명의 표본을 대상으로 수집한 연구의 분석 결과는 대체로 다음의 몇 가지로 요약할 수 있었다. 먼저, 페이스북 읽기는 정치효능감에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나, 쓰기는 정치효능감 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 트위터 읽기와 쓰기 행위는 정치효능감 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났는데, 이러한 결과는, 페이스북에 견줘, 트위터가 가지는 매체적 속성이 리트윗과 같은 정보 소통과 연계망 활용의 목적으로 더 많이 이용되는데 따른 결과로 해석되었다. 다음으로, 사회자본 형성에 있어 페이스북과 트위터 읽기와 쓰기의 영향력을 주목할 만한 것으로 나타났다. 페이스북과 트위터 읽기가 교량적, 결속적 사회자본 모두에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 가운데, 트위터 쓰기는 결속적 사회자본에 오히려 부정적인 영향을 미치고 있었다. 네트워크의 개방성과 익명성 수준이 상대적으로 높은 트위터보다는 페이스북이 사회자본 구축에 더 유리하다는 사실과 함께 사회자본 형성에 있어 쓰기보다는 읽기가 더욱 기능적임을 시사 받을 수 있었다. 마지막으로, 페이스북과 트위터 읽기와 쓰기 과정에서 의견불일치 경험을 더 많이 한 이용자는 그렇지 않은 이용자보다 훨씬 높은 수준의 정치효능감을 보여주었을 뿐 아니라 교량적, 결속적 사회자본 구축에도 강점을 보이고 있었다. 페이스북과 트위터를 매개로 한 정치커뮤니케이션 효과는 의견불일치 과정과 경험을 통해서 더욱 확산될 수 있다는 사실을 미루어 짐작할 수 있었다.

Abstract

Not only reading but writing either on Facebook or Twitter represents a new trend of political communication which makes people experience opinion disagreement inevitably. This study aims at evaluating the degree to which such communications have an impact on political efficacy and social capital. Research results analyzed by collecting 506 online samples show the following points. First of all, while Facebook ‘reading’ having a negative impact, such ‘writing’ on SNS has positive influence. Neither reading nor writing on Twitter had nothing to do with political efficacy. Such characteristics interwoven more with communicating information along with employing networks seem to be responsible for the result. Impact on social capital was the next visit of analysis. It turns out that nurturing social capital puts considerable credit to such activities as reading and writing. While reading via Facebook and Twitter has an impact on bridging and bonding capital, Twitter writing has negatively affected on the capital. It is plausible accordingly that Facebook is believed to have higher level of openness and anonymity than Twitter is far beneficial to build social capital. Also is it supported that writing not reading plays a critical role to securing capital. Finally, it shows that the more opinion disagreement they sense, the bigger political efficacy and social capital they get. It is thus argued that the power of political communication may be enlarged by the process of the experiences of opinion disagreement.
