이 연구는 신부족 이론과 디지털 컨버전스 이론을 바탕으로, 팬데믹 이후 OTT 플랫폼을 통해 형성된 온라인 취향공동체가 어떠한 문화적 특성과 사회적 의미를 갖는지를 탐구하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 위해 OTT 플랫폼 ‘왓챠(WATCHA)’의 실시간 그룹 스트리밍 서비스 ‘왓챠파티(WATCHA Party)’에서 형성된 온라인 취향공동체 ‘왓착즙’을 연구대상으로 선정하였다. 자료 수집을 위해 연구참여자 10명을 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 진행하고, 약 2년간 참여관찰을 수행하였다. 수집된 자료는 조르지(Giorgi)의 현상학적 방법으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, ‘왓착즙’은 신부족의 다섯 가지 특성(정감적 성운, 선택적 사회성, 종교적 모델, 쓸모없는 함께-하기, 비밀의 법칙)과 디지털 컨버전스가 상호작용하여 독창적인 디지털 컨버전스 컬처를 만들어냈다. ‘왓착즙’의 디지털 컨버전스 컬처는 내부적으로 자체 규칙 준수와 상호 지지를 통해 공동체 지속 가능성을 강화하였다. 외부적으로는 영화를 매개로 사회적 문제를 논의하고 행동 참여를 유도하며 현실과 가상의 경계를 허물었다. 이 연구는 OTT 플랫폼 기반의 취향공동체가 사회적 고립을 완화하고 정서적 유대를 강화하는 장, 더 나아가 문화 생산과 사회적 참여를 위한 실천의 장이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 이는 OTT 플랫폼 기반의 취향공동체가 디지털 기술의 상업적 한계를 넘어 디지털 시대에 창의적이고 새로운 공동체로서 형성·작동될 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study explores the cultural characteristics and social implications of an online taste community that has emerged on an OTT(Over The Top) platform in the post-pandemic era, drawing on neo-tribe theory and digital convergence theory. The research focuses on “Watchakjeup,” a taste community formed through the real-time group streaming service “WATCAHA Party” on the OTT platform “WATCHA” Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation and analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological approach. The findings reveal that the five characteristics of neo-tribes—emotional nebula, selective socialization, religious model, useless togetherness, and secret law—interact with digital convergence, shaping a distinct digital convergence culture. Within “Watchakjeup,” this culture fosters community sustainability through internal mechanisms of self-regulation and mutual support while externally engaging in social discourse and activism through film, blurring the boundaries between reality and virtuality. This study highlights that an OTT platform-based taste community can serve as a space for alleviating social isolation, strengthening emotional bonds, and facilitating cultural production and social engagement. Furthermore, the findings suggest that such a community can transcend the commercial constraints of digital technologies, evolving into a creative, communal, and digitally driven bridging community in the contemporary digital era.
