Abstract

This writing objects to explain characteristics of Juvenile Literature of Lee Won-su in the later period of Japanese occupation. During the later period of Japanese occupation with extreme plunder of imperialism, Lee Won-su actively published thirty pieces of work. They are classified by four types; children’s living poetry, pro-Japanese works, children’s play poetry, and children’s aesthetic poetry. They are optimistic children’s living poems or entertaining play poems, which is different from Lee Won-su’s statement saying his poems approached the reality of the poor common children. Moreover, he published Pro-Japanese works at the end of the later period of Japanese occupation, which represents the voluntary anti-national characteristic of his literature. Among his works in this period, Lee Won-su republished children’s living poems that included a guideline for a new life in imperialism. It was close to be rather seen as a healthy and enterprising national children’s image. It seems he planned idea-laundering on his works by ignoring the pro-Japanese context in them. People have called him a nationalist without knowing the truth. In addition, unknown 12 pieces of his work in this period are all children’s play poems or aesthetic poems. There are pro-Japanese works as well. Lee Won-su probably did not want these works to be discovered and they have been totally forgotten in his literature. Due to this ignorance, his fame has been emphasized as the writer of 「Spring of home place」, the nationalist, and the realist. The people in juvenile literature have to reflect on themselves since they have called Lee Won-su a master of juvenile literature without sufficient research. New step has to start to fully understand and enjoy our modern juvenile literature.
