Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relative importance of a set of five ski destination attributes to college skiers and snowboarders of differing recreation specialization levels. The data were collected from 258 college students taking elective courses at six universities in Seoul- Kyungki. Participants were queried to establish their specialization level in skiing or snowboarding and then asked to evaluate 12 hypothetical ski resort scenarios to implicitly express their choice preferences. The overall results of the aggregated conjoint analysis revealed that snow quality was the most important choice factor (32.58%), followed by lift wait time (18.31%), travel hour (16.79%), daily expense (16.71%), and the number of ski lifts (15.60%). To investigate the effects of ski/snowboard specialization on these choice factors, three groups were formed based on ski/snowboard experience (non-skier group) and cluster analysis (less and more specialized groups). The sub-group level conjoint analysis revealed that the relative importance of all factors largely depended on recreation specialization. The subsequent t-test found significant group differences among the two specialization groups in terms of 'snow quality' and 'daily expense'. The results of the current study suggest that wider application of conjoint analysis and recreation specialization can help ski destination managers better understand their sport consumer preferences and behaviors.
