Abstract
This experiment was designed to examine the fluid intake pattern against body weight loss during simulated Olympic Distance triathlon race in eight National Squad caliber elite triathletes, and to evaluate how the body water was maintained during the race. During a training period for the National Sports Festival, triathletes got up at 7:30 and started the race at 10:30 similar to the actual game. Before and after the race, their body weight, urine specific gravityhb was measured and blood samples were collected. During the race, heart rate, race time, the amount of fluid intake and body temperature were measured. Sweat rate was calculated. Blood samples were analyzed for lactate, glucose, lactate dehydrorenase, sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium ions, osmolality, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, uric acid, creatinine, hematocrit, hemoglobin, creaine kinase, c-reactive protein, white blood cell counts, and platelet. After the race, they lost 1.2±0.6kg of total body weight, t rivalent to 2% of loss from the baseline. Sweat rate (except swimming phase) was 1.15±0.26kg/hr. After the race, lactate, Na+, Ca++, osmolality, blood protein variables were increased compared to before the race. The inflammatory index was also elevated. Based on the results, the body weight did not changed abruptly and marginally and this could be possible due to fluid rehydration during the race. After the race, metabolic by-product was elevated and electrolytes and plasma osmolality as well as oncotic pressure were elevated. Generally, inflammatory index was elevated but not acutely.
