Abstract
Princess Myungan (明安公主, 1665-1687) was the third daughter of Hyunjong(顯宗) in the Choseon dynasty, and her belongings (forty five articles) were kept by the family of O-Thaejoo(오태주) until being delivered to the Kangneung Museum(강릉박물관) and designated Korea National Treasure No 1,220 by the Ministry of Culture & Tourism in 1995. Among the belongings is a Korean letter that has been claimed to have been written by Princess Myungan herself. However, this is doubtful, as the words and sentences used in the letter are not characteristic of the Korean language in the 17th century. For example, the letter includes the verb 'ha-'(하-), which was actually spelled 'hʌ-'(-) in the 17th century and only changed to 'ha-'(하-) at the end of 19th century. There are also many other signs that this letter was not written by Princess Myungan. Accordingly, it is considered that the 'Byungin' year(병인년) referred to in the letter is either 1886 or 1926, with the latter being more likely. Plus, the letter is believed to have been written by Youaeng.
