Abstract

This paper focuses on the particle ’도‘ positioning after the noun phrases, and aims to identify its meaning and distribution patterns. In this paper, the meaning of '도’ is discussed by introducing the concept of 'paradigm'. Primary meaning/function of '도‘ is to identify other paradigms within or beyond the text. Paradigms have two types. Paradigms which are automatically identified by the appearance of '도’ after a noun phrase are either other noun phrases or sentences/propositions. Paradigms are either equal or progressive. Progressive paradigms inherently accompany unexpectedness. Concepts of equalness, progressiveness, and unexpectedness which is essentially accompanied by progressiveness explain a plurality of meanings of '도’ that have been discussed so far in many researches and dictionaries. On the other hand, '도‘ has two distribution types depending on if the paradigm is a noun phrase, or a sentence/proposition. Also, whether the paradigm has equalness or progressiveness decides if the distribution of more than two '도’s in one sentence is allowed or restricted.
