영화 『죽은 시인의 사회』와 리더십의 관계

영화에서 리더십은 다양하게 펼쳐진다. 일부 영화에서는 권위적이고 강압적인리더십을 보여주는 가하면 희생적이고 봉사적인 리더십을 보여주는 영화도 있다. 영화 『죽은 시인의 사회』는 내용적인 측면에서는 교육적인 문제를 다루고 있으나 주인공의 역할이나 행위를 중심에 두고 보면 리더십의 전형적인 모습을 보여준다. 특히 『죽은 시인의 사회』에서 리더십은 주인공인 키팅 선생을 중심으로 심층적으로 그려진다. 『죽은 시인의 사회』에서 리더십은 일차적으로 웰튼고등학교의 교육이 학생들의 희망이나 의지와는 상관없는 철저한 입시를 위한 교육임을 자각하는 현실의개혁에 초점이 맞춰지고 그것은 무엇보다 기존의 교육이 학교와 사회에 의해 강요된 교육이자 입시 위주의 교육임을 자각하고 학생 중심의 자유로운 교육을 실천하는데 목표를 둔다. 리더십을 발휘하는데 중요한 요인이 되고 있는 동기 부여 또한 드러난다. 영화에서의 동기부여는 현실변화의 필요성을 각인하는데서 출발하고, 학생들 스스로의 삶 즉 주체적인 삶을 찾아 실천하는데 있다. 특히 이 영화에서도 키팅 선생의동기부여가 결국 학생들로 하여금 자발적인 내면의 변화를 이끌어 내는데 결정적인 역할을 한다. 또한 영화에서는 키팅 선생의 리더십에는 헌신과 희생이 동반되어 나타난다. 『죽은 시인의 사회』에서 키팅 선생은 카리스마적이고 강압적인 면을 보이기보다학생들의 마음을 헤아리고 그들에게 헌신하는 태도로 접근한다.리더와 팔로어의 관계 또한 이상적으로 보여준다. 리더와 팔로어의 관계는 리더십을 구성하는 핵심적인 요소이다. 『죽은 시인의 사회』에서는 리더와 팔로어의관계가 수직적 관계가 아니라 수평적 관계를 보여준다. 이러한 관계는 키팅 선생의 학생들에 대한 이해와 배려에서 출발하고 있으며 소통부분에서도 그대로 드러난다. 또한 영화에서는 키팅 선생과 학생들은 교사와 학생이란 신분이지만 교육현실과 자신들의 삶을 개혁하기 위해 일심동체적인 행동을 보여주는 공생적 관계의 모습도 보여주고 있다. 『죽은 시인의 사회』는 교사와 학생들 사이에서 발휘되는 리더십을 보여주지만기존의 리더십과는 다른 리더십을 보여준다. 특히 키팅 선생에 의해 발휘되는 리더십은 현 시대에 요구되는 변혁적 리더십의 전형을 보여준다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The various leadership is spreaded in the movie. Some of movies show the authoritative and forceful leadership and others sacrificed and served leadership. “Dead Poets Society”(1989) is educative story substantively. But when we consider hero’s action in this movie, this movie expresses typical leadership. Its hero is Kiting and in this movie Kiting’s leadership is appeared deeply. The distinct characteristic of leadership that is exposed in this movie is reform of reality, motivation, dedication and sacrifice. In this movie the reform of reality is reform of the education and this focuses on the free and independent education for students. The motivation is that students live an independent life. Theses attract voluntary participation from students. And the dedication and sacrifice are very important in Kiting’s leadership. He shows these factors in his students’s education and consultation. The relation between Kiting and his students is not vertical relation but mutual dependent relation. This starts from mutual understanding and consideration. And Kiting and his students pursue symbiotic relationship in the movie. Ultimately the leadership in the movie shows transformational leadership that is associated with its higher level.
