이 논문은 기존 논의에서 이미 언급하였던 인용명사 구문의 의미･화용적 기능에 대한 접근뿐만 아니라 의미･ 화용적 기능의 더 근원이 되는 인지적 기능과 담화적 기능도 함께 포괄적으로 기술하는 것이 주요 목표이다. 논의를 요약하면 첫 번째, 의미적 기능으로 인용명사가 고유하게 가지고 있는 비명시성(unspecificity)과, 화자의 태도를 드러내기 위하여 사용하는 ‘특징화(characterizing)’ 기능을 제시하고 있다. 두 번째, 화용적 기능으로 인용명사가 문두에 위치할 경우 인용 내용이 ‘초점화’되고, 인용명사는 그러한 신호적 수단으로 ‘주제어’ 위치에 사용된다는 것이다. 세 번째, 인지적 기능으로 제시하고 있는 것은 인용명사의 ‘일시적 개념 형성(temporary concept formation)’ 기능으로 청자의 인지적 부담을 경감시켜주는 것이 기본 원리인데, 인지언어학적 관점에서 복잡한 하나의 덩어리 정보를 나누어 인식하도록 하는 ‘개념적 분할(conceptual partitioning)’의 개념과 행위보다 하나의 ‘사물’로 개념화하는 명사의 인지적 효과를 반영하는 ‘구체화(reifying)’ 효과로 설명하고 있다. 마지막으로 담화적 기능으로 제시한 인용명사의 텍스트 결속 기능은 인용명사와 인용 내용 간의 의미 관계를 ‘예측(prospection)’하는 기능과 이어지는 인용 내용을 안내하는 ‘길잡이(signposting)’ 역할로 설명하였다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this article is to comprehensively describe not only the approach to semantic and pragmatic functions (unspecificity, modal expression functions, anaphoric) already mentioned in previous discussions, but also the cognitive and discourse functions that are the more fundamental of these semantic and pragmatic functions. First, what is suggested as a semantic function is the unspecificity inherent in shell nouns and a “characterizing” function that is used to reveal the speaker’s attitude. Second, what is suggested as a pragmatic function is that when shell nouns are placed at the head of a sentence, they are “focused” and the shell nouns are used for the subject position based on the meaning of such signaling. Third, a cognitive function is suggested to reduce the cognitive burden of the listener with the function of a “temporary concept formation” of shell nouns. The "temporary concept formation" function of shell nouns is explained by the concept of “conceptual partitioning” and the “reifying” effect from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Finally, the text binding function of the shell nouns presented as a discourse function is explained as a function of the “prospection” of the semantic relationship between shell nouns and shell contents and the role of the “signposting” that guides the shell contents.
