Power Struggle in Indonesia and Political Propensity of NU - Based on Actual Analysis -

To win the election of July 2004, the first direct election implemented in the history of Indonesia's constitutionalism, candidates to presidency from the key political parties, they chose those with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) background as their running rate, not only because NU is Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, but it is deemed to hold powerful bonding and binding powers. However, candidates of the National Assembly's Political Party 1 and 2 lost to Yudoyono, candidate from the Democratic Party that merely picked up 7.5% support in the general election held immediately prior to the presidential election even when prominent figures from NU were recruited as VP candidates. The results of the presidential election show that the key political parties in Indonesia read the political propensity and the real face of NU wrong. This research intends to find the answers to this issue, and seeks to approach the issue in two aspects to analyze NU's political propensity. First, this research is to analyze how political relations with the non-Islamic and other Islamic organizations were handled for power struggle from the nation's founding to the present. Second purpose is to analyze political propensity of NU through analysis of pesantren's tradition and political behavior of kiai, the pillar of NU.
