초록

This study is designed to give some information on the tolerance of Islam and its differentiation in the Islamic history. There are two images on Islam that dominate Islam. The one is on tolerance, the other is on intolerance. The picture with "A sword in one hand and the Quran in the other" is famous on the explanation of Islamic intolerance. The Quran "There is no compulsion in Islam." is presented to explain the tolerance of Islam. But the West may try to adopt the negative image of Islam. This is the main cause of misunderstanding Islam from the West. Owing to this reason. we may confront many negative words on Islam used in the West. Among them, there are Islamophobia, Jihad, terror, fundamentalism etc. The important thing is how to understand Islam, how to approach Islamic tolerance, how to separate social-economical differentiation and religious persecution. The Islamic tolerance have to be approached by whether religious persecution is in Islam or not. In chapter Ⅱ, Islamophobia is described to understand what are the main cause of anger and horror on the Islam that the West has had. In chapter Ⅲ, the two types of understanding Islam are presented. One is negative from the West, the other is positive from the Islam. In chapter Ⅳ, Islamic tolerance is described through the case of Dhimmi and jizya. Islamic tolerance has to be understood not from the social and economical differentiation but the existence of religious persecution or not. Throughout the Islamic history, there is no religious persecution(compulsion) in Islam except the Shi'a region. In chapter Ⅴ, the reasons of Islamic differentiation are presented. There are two main reasons of Islamic differentiation. One is from the inner Islam, the other is from the West. However, Islam has overcome these differentiations through traditional spirit of tolerance. This is the main power of equality and impartiality of Islam.
