Abstract

Anxiety is one of the most important theme of modern literature, along with desire, alienation and environment. In the novels of Lee, Cheong-jun the primal scene of anxiety is the flashlight scene in the storeroom in his debut work, Discharge from the Hospital(퇴원). The flashlight as a sign of danger is both the object-cause of the subject's anxiety. In this sense, father's flashlight is a dramatized objective correlative of the Other's gazing power. The dynamics between the subject's eye and the Other's gaze in this archetypal scene constitutes a most important narrating and characterizing principle in Lee's works. This scene develops later into a landscape of agoraphobia, as we can see in the works such as Winter Plaza(겨울 광장), Mr. Mandeuk Cho (조만득씨), Fascinating Disappearance(황홀한 실종). The Wall of Rumors(소문의 벽), The Unwritten Autobiography(씌어지지 않은 자서전) and Aside before the Flashlight(전짓불 앞의 방백) are all stories about the subjects who feel anxiety about their narration because they cannot be free from the Other's principle of pleasure, symbolized as the flashlight. The imagination of anxiety in Lee's works is closely connected with the political unconsciousness which dreams of freedom. Through his novel, Lee tried to fight against the harsh reality of the uncertain age with his literary weapon of anxious imagination.
