이 論文은 語彙意味의 兩面的 意味屬性을 ‘홀론(holon)’이라는 패러다임을 도입하여 分析해 보고자 쓰인 것이다. 홀론이란 어떤 個體가 全體와 部分이라는 두 가지 屬性을 同時에 가진다는 관점으로, 동일한 語彙가 서로 다른 單語意味와 文脈意味를 가지는 兩面性을 分析하는 데 매우 적합한 方法論이라고 본다. 한 어휘는 쓰임에 따라서 單語로서의 意味屬性을 가지고 文章構成素로서의 의미속성을 가진다. 홀론적 관점에서 볼 때, 單語는 단어 內部에 여럿의 의미를 담은 完結된 語彙體로서 全體의 意味屬性을 지니는 반면, 文章構成素는 문장 속의 다른 構成素와의 相互關係에 의한 單一意味를 가지는 部分的 意味屬性을 지닌다. 單語意味는 未分性, 流動性, 自律性의 의미를 가지는 反面, 文章構成素의 意味는 文脈意味에 의한 分化性, 固定性, 隸屬性의 意味를 가지게 된다. 單語와 文章構成素의 의미속성은 意味素, 內包와 外延 의미성분에서도 서로 差異가 나타난다.
Abstract
Using the notion of holon, this paper analyzes the ambivalent semantic property of vocabulary meaning. Holon refers to the state of any entity which has the quality of the whole yet that of the part as well; it is con- sidered useful as a method to analyze the state in which a word has both word meaning and context meaning. Contingent upon a local context, a word is given not only a semantic quality as a separate word but also a semantic quality as a sentence constituent. In terms of holon, a word has a semantic quality as a whole within it as a complete unit with multiple meanings, whereas a sentence constituent has a single yet partial semantic quality due to its interconnection with other semantic constituents. Word meaning is characterized by its undividableness, fluidity, and autonomy; Meaning of sentence constituents is characterized by its divergency, fixity, and dependency. The difference of semantic qualities as revealed in word and sentence constituents can be found also in such semantic elements as sememe, denotation, and connotation.
