Abstract

This essay delves into the influence and significance of socialism on New Women, in particular, the women writers in the colonized Chosun Dynasty. In 1920's, lots of groups such as ‘The Society of Chosun Women’, ‘The Association of Kyungsung Female Young Adults’, ‘The Society of Young Ladies in Kyungsung’, ‘The Coterie of Geun-u’ were organized. ‘The Coterie of Geun-u' participated in idealistic and systematic Woman's Movement mainly by female students. This kind of systematization of female students' movement impacted the current feminist circles in those days. Women writers as Park, Hwa-shung, Kang, Kyung-ae and Pack, Shin-ae were the members of ‘The Coterie of Geun-u', and Song, Kye-wol and Lim, Soon-duk were involved in female students movement around the coterie. Young Mother, the first ‘female’ project novel, written by Park, Hwa-shung, Song, Kye-wol, Choi, Jung-hee, Kang, Kyung-ae and Kim, Cha-hye notified the appearance of women writers as a group on a stage. It also implied the changed geography of women writers on the basis of women's transformation through socialism. In the individual cases, the quest for the relation between class and femininity was connected to the search for the identity of women writers and constitution of the social subject. It could supply a new position of a different topographical map for new women writers.
