Abstract

A Study on the Development of Modern Literature and Discourse of Sensibility Park, Suk-ja This document investigates the development of a literary measure stick called the theory of ‘excess sensibility’. Many of the early modern literatures were excluded or underestimated in literature history that deals with the valuation of ‘excess sensibility’ theory. Short stories of 1910’s, poetry of 1920’s and literary works of contemporary female writers were not fully acknowledged as true literature when valued by the ‘excess sensibility’ theory. The criterion of evaluation of ‘excess sensibility’ theory lies on the existence of ‘an adequate sensibility’. It is likely that a type of nationalistic sensibility called ‘sympathy’ is in the center of it. Through ‘sympathy', the imagination of the nationalistic category permeates a social one. In this process, one’s sensibility is belittled as ‘excess sensibility’ and sympathy is recommended as a social moral act. Nationalistic enlightenment has an aspect that regulates even personal sensibility. This phenomenon that runned on into 1920’s functioned as a logic that disparaged contemporary poetry and female literary works of the time. Furthermore, sensibility came to have their own gender and nationalistic sensibility were more and more thought of as the ‘right sensibility’.
