Abstract

Gender (Un)consciousness in Hwang, Seok-young's Early Short Stories Kim, Mi-hyun Influence of feminity is evident even in Hwang, Seok-young's early short stories, which are prominently known as ‘masculine literature'. Although it is hard to deny the fact that female characters have usually played roles as supporting characters and considered as the “others”, they have actively intervened in the male characters' consciousness and behaviors. In regard to such phenomenon, it is vital to make a revision in the dichotomy that states ‘male=modern subject' and ‘female= pre-modern subject'. Moreover, by examining the hybrid in the female identity in Hwang, Seok-young's early stories, there is an attempt for disclosing the complexity of modernity revealed in his stories through realistic discourse. This can be explained by the contradictory feelings of temptation and fear, hatred and pity, control and subordinate that the male characters have toward the female characters, which are an antinomy experience of modernity.
