Abstract

This paper goes deep into the study of Shim Yeon-su who was under the Japanese rule and a Chosun poet in Manchuria. It is to look around what his poetic feature is and what the meaning of the history of Korean contemporary poems has. It seems likely me that it is the original text. Today his original kept in Yeon-byon(延邊) and other cities and the poems published in ‘The Mansun Ilbo' are examined. And then it is found that 49 ones of the total 321 pieces are adapted from the original up to three times. At the last part of the original recorded date for writing and the order by their bundles are referred. There is evidence to suggest remaking them. Owing to that, it is considered as the final text for myself. Although most of 49 pieces are in the bundles of their manuscript, ‘The Horizon' - Shim's personal selections, there is evidence to suggest that 16 poems have been rewritten from it. Also it is proved that #2 bundle carries them. On the basis of that, let's look at his poetical characteristics connected with his life. His poems are double-faced and have various properties. This reflects the wave of modernization through the Japanese colonial period. Above all, on the eve of the fall of the Japanese Empire they increased armed aggression and forced Koreans to assimilate into the Japanese culture during 1940s, but his poems are not assimilated and kept on the writing with speaking his thoughts. His poetical fruits which have the hope for a new bright future are invaluable in the history of Korean contemporary poems.
