Abstract
This study analyzes Han Kang's first short story collection, Yeosu's Love (1995), and her first full-length novel, Black Deer (1998), to identify the foundational elements of her literary imagination. It traces how the early phases of her work anticipate and foreshadow her later novels, from The Vegetarian (2007) and Human Acts (2014) to We Do Not Part (2021). The aim is to explore the formative structure of the author's narrative unconscious by examining how her early works serve as narrative precursors to the thematic and structural tendencies of her later oeuvre. Han Kang is depicted as a literary “sorcerer” who employs a mystery-novel-like structure to probe existential loneliness. She uncovers the origins of ontological solitude by navigating the self and the world through the mirror of the past and of others, invoking dreams and fantastical elements to expose the suppressed unconscious and life’s hidden truths. From her debut story ”Red Anchor” (1994), through Yeosu's Love and Black Deer, Han Kang has constructed a multidimensional literary universe. Her protagonists, shaped by an internalized "orphan consciousness," confront repressed trauma through the dynamics of familial loss and the mirrored pain of “deficient others.” In the process, they engage in a narrative structure that confirms both heterogeneous homogeneity and homogeneous identity, while navigating the tension between dream and reality.
