이 글은 남유용(南有容)이 여성 망자를 대상으로 한 산문을 고찰하고 그 특징을 논하는 데에 목적을 둔 것이다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 가족 내 여성과가족 외 여성 두 가지 측면으로 남유용이 여성 망자를 대상으로 한 글을 살피고자 하였다. 먼저 가족 내 여성의 경우, 남유용이 생전 망자와 가까웠으므로 망자의 인물됨을 섬세하게 그려내는 모습을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편 가족 외 여성을 대상으로 하는 경우, 망자 주변의 인물들이 이들이 전해주는 망자에 대한 정보가 그만큼 신뢰할 만함을 강조하거나, 망자의 남편이 망자에 대해 남긴 기록을 참고해 글을 작성하면서도, 자신만의 서술 구조를 활용해 인물을 묘사하였다. 남유용이 활동했던 시기의 문단은 여성을 대상으로 한 글을 활발히 창작하였는데, 그 또한 여성 망자를 대상으로 한 글을 창작하여 당대 문단의 양상을 반영하였다. 다만 남유용은 망자를 잘 허여할 수 있는 서술 방식에 중점을 두고 이를 글에서 활용하고자 하였다는 점에서 그의 여성 망자를 대상으로 한 글은 의미가 있다.
Abstract
This study reviews and discusses the characteristics of Nam Yu-yong’s prose on the female deceased. To this end, Nam Yu-yong’s writings were examined in two aspects: women within and outside the family. First, in the case of women in the family, Nam Yu-yong was close to the deceased during his lifetime, and the fact that he delicately portrays their character was confirmed. Conversely, when targeting women other than their families, the people around the deceased emphasized that the information about the deceased they delivered was so reliable, or while writing by referring to the records left by the deceased’s husband, they used their own narrative structure to describe the characters. During Nam Yu-yong’s time, articles for women were actively created in the literature, and he also created articles for the female deceased to reflect the aspects of the literature of the time. However, Nam Yu-yong’s writing for the female deceased is meaningful in that he tried to use it in his writing with an emphasis on a narrative method that could allow the deceased well.
