Abstract

The subject of revolution sought by Im Hwa has been assumed to be the proletariat, consistent with Marxist’s definition of revolution. However, this study aims to elucidate the meaning of the revolution that Im Hwa pursued, focusing on that he brought the intelligentsia who is not non-proletarian forth as revolutionary subject. He found the seed of revolution in the “experience” of the intelligentsia, which is literary performance that shows or tells the public about the revolution and the new era. Because the intelligentsia as poetic speaker has lost historical inevitability, he seeks to realize the revolution not through class struggle, but through literary performance. Since Tonight Father pulled the blue blanket over, the speaker produces the time of the revolution outside of chronological time through utterance. The speaker as intelligentsia does performative utterance to realize revolution deviated from Marxism. The speaker defines himself as the subject of the revolution through reflexive utterances and seeks to perform the revolution through writing and telling about it. By introducing a class and temporal division into Marxism, Im Hwa envisioned a revolution in which the intelligentsia was the subject, and his poetry shows the possibility of revolution implicit in the literary performance of the intelligentsia.
