Abstract
Goldenhar syndrome, also known as Oculo-Auriculo-Vertebral (OAV) syndrome, is a rare congenital defect characterized by the incomplete development of the ear, soft palate, lip, and mandible. It is associated with the anomalous development of the first branchial arch and second branchial arch. Common clinical manifestations include limbal dermoids, preauricular skin tags, and microtia. The aim of this case review was to investigate the auditory performance for a child with Goldenhar syndrome who had received a cochlear implant. The subject received a Advanced Bionics Hifocus cochlear implant at the age of 13 months and 16 electrode inserted at time of surgery but only five electrodes were active, so she had reoperation. In particular listening tests and speech perception evaluations were conducted. As a result after auditory training for 6 months, She showed limited sound response and could not perform the formal speech perception tests for initial several months but detection ability of environmental sounds has shown continuous improvement over time. Conclusions from the study showed in a Goldenhar syndrome child with inner ear malformation limited development in auditory performance as a main outcome cochlear implant. However aural rehabilitation in order to achieve more auditory development and a multidisciplinary approach should be undertaken by multi-departments can provide quality of life improvements.
