본 연구는 일반아동과 증상이 상반적인 내재화 문제행동 집단과 외현화 문제행동 집단 간의 부모들의 의사소통 형태를 비교하여, 의사소통 형태가 아동의 독특한 행동 형성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 가를 살펴보고자 하였다. 서울지역 내 초등학교 5학년에 재학하고 있는 일반아동 20명, 내재화 문제행동 아동 20명 그리고 외현화 문제행동 아동 20명이 연구대상으로 참여하였다. Gumperz가 제작한 아동용 질문지를 사용하여 아동이 지각하는 부모의 의사소통 형태를 명령적 형태, 지위적 형태, 인성적 형태로 구분하여 비교하였다. 분석결과 (1) 일반아동의 부모들은 아동을 훈육하는데 있어서 행동의 결과가 아동과 부모에게 미치는 영향을 고려한 인성적 의사소통 형태를 빈번하게 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. (2) 내재화 문제행동 집단의 경우는 부모들이 아동의 행동을 통제함에 있어서 성인중심적인 보편적 규범이나 아동의 지위, 학년, 성별과 관련된 기준을 설정하여 행동에 제한을 가하는 지위적 의사소통 형태를 자주 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. (3) 외현화 문제행동 집단의 부모들은 아동이 문제행동을 보일 때마다 설명이나 설득 없이 금지 명령을 내린다거나, 욕을 하고 꾸짖으며, 심지어는 아동에게 체벌을 가하는 명령적 의사소통 형태를 자주 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이상과 같은 결과를 바탕으로, 아동의 문제행동을 긍정적으로 변화시키기 위하여 내재화 및 외현화 문제행동 아동의 가정 내 효과적인 의사소통 교육 프로그램을 개발하는데 필요한 실천적 중재 방안을 제언하였다.
Abstract
In order to investigate the question how parents' communication patterns influenced on their children's behavior formation, this study attempted to compare parents' communication patterns perceived by their children of three groups including the normal group, the internalizing behavior problem group, and the externalizing behavior problem group whose heterogeneous symptoms were considered. A total of 60 children (i.e., 20 normal children, 20 children with internalizing behavior problems, and 20 children with externalizing behavior problems) who were enrolling in the 5th grade of elementary schools in Seoul were participated in the study. The data of parents' communication patterns perceived by their children were analyzed by using a questionnaire designed by Gumperz, which was consisted of three different types of communication patterns such as imperative, position-oriented, and person-oriented. The results of analyses indicated that (1) parents of normal children tended to use frequently the person-oriented communication pattern which was concerned with how such behavioral consequences would affect on children and parents in disciplining their children, (2) parents of children with internalizing behavior problems tended to use frequently the position-oriented communication pattern which was concerned with basic norms related to adult-oriented universal positional appeals and their children's status, grade, and gender in controlling their children's behaviors, and (3) parents of children with externalizing behavior problems tended to use frequently the imperative communication pattern that parents gave their children prohibitive orders without providing any explanation or persuasion, abused, and beat them, whenever their children showed behavior problems. Based on the findings, to contriving positive changes in the children's behavior problems, I discussed practical implications for developing effective communication training programs in family settings of children with internalizing and externalizing behavior problems.
