미국수화 사용 영어수업이 청각장애 초등부 아동의 어휘력 향상에 미치는 효과

이 연구는 미국수화를 사용한 영어수업이 청각장애학교 초등부 아동의 어휘력 향상에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위해 양적연구를 실시하였다. 연구 대상 아동은 모두 28명의 청각장애아동으로 실험집단 14명과 비교집단 14명으로 구성되었다. 실험집단은 부산시와 대구시에 소재한 청각장애학교 초등부 4, 5, 6학년에 재학 중인 청각장애아동이다. 비교집단은 울산시와 충북 충주시에 소재한 청각장애학교 초등부 4, 5, 6학년에 재학 중인 청각장애아동이다. 연구 대상 참여 교사는 청각장애아동의 영어수업을 미국수화로 운영한 담임교사 6명으로 이 연구의 실험집단을 직접 지도한 담임교사들이다. 이 연구의 결론으로 미국수화를 사용한 영어수업이 청각장애학교 초등부 아동의 어휘력에 긍정적인 효과를 미친다. 영어 점수의 총점과 객관식 점수에 긍정적인 영향을 미치지만, 주관식 점수에서는 효과가 크게 나타나지 않는다. 그러나 미국수화를 사용한 영어수업이 영어의 지문자 학습에 미치는 효과는 매우 크다. 특히 미국지화에 대한 교육효과는 시각적으로 영어를 정확하게 인지하고 기억할 수 있는 전략과 관련되므로 청각장애아동을 위한 주요한 영어교육방법으로 이해된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to illustrate the effects of English teaching with ASL to increase English vocabulary ability for hearing impaired children in the elementary school level. A total of 48 hearing impaired children who are 4th, 5th, and 6th grade in a special school participated for this study. An experimental group included 14 hearing impaired children in two special schools and the control group included 14 hearing impaired children from two different special schools. The six teachers learned the ASL and English teaching with ASL from a professor who knows and teaches ASL at a University. Pre- and post-test were utilized to illustrate the effects of the English teaching with ASL. The results of this study were that: the English teaching with ASL was effective in increasing English vocabulary ability for hearing impaired children. English teaching with ASL gave the hearing impaired children motivation and self-efficacy. Therefore, this study concluded that English teaching with ASL for hearing impaired children was effective to increase English vocabulary ability, and the class teacher recognized that ASL is an excellent tool to teach English for hearing impaired children.
