Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find core vocabulariy of preschool children with or without disabilities for Augmentative and Alternative Communication(AAC) intervention. Method: The participants of this study was 90 preschool children aged 3 and 5 years and 8 preschool children with disabilities. The vocabulary of children without disabilities was collected from the context of kindergarten/day-care center, local community and home. The vocabulary of children with disabilities was collected in their day-care center. Voice recorder was used and all data were transcribed and analyzed. Results: First, core vocabulary used by children with or without disabilities were over 80% of total words they used. Second, in case of children without disabilities in three contexts, total core vocabulary was 248 words and the common core vocabulary was 136 words. In case of children with disabilities, core vocabulary was 229 words in day-care center. Third, in case of children without disabilities, high frequency core vocabulary was verb-noun-pronoun-adverb-postposition but in case of children with disabilities, it was noun-verb-adjective-adverb-interjection-postposition. Conclusion: It is important to consider core vocabulary for AAC intervention. Because high frequency core vocabulary include function words, it is important to consider function words based on conversation for AAC intervention.
